Up tempo: Starting over in Jersey City

Two years ago, right around the time Vic Della Pello was gearing up to make some major life changes, a friend dared him to shave his head. New to his 40s, with a hunk of hair thinning as fast as he could blow out his birthday candles, he decided losing his hair was a good way to jump-start his plan.

Not only did Della Pello like his new look, he enjoyed the newfound respect that came with being bald. "People think I'm a police officer," he said recently. "I'm treated with authority." And since acquiring the new do (or lack of), the 6-foot, 1-inch Della Pello also has gotten a kick out of being mistaken for the actor Vin Diesel -- in one encounter, a woman sitting next to him on an airplane insisted he was the actor, no matter how many times he told her he wasn't. Eventually, she had one too many cocktails and fell asleep, content to be resting beside a "star."
